PLASTIC MASQUERADE

Is there anyone that stumbles?
Is there anyone that’s scared?
Has anyone been humbled?
Does anybody care?

When I take a look around me
Everyone seems so refined
I was lonely ‘til He found me
I’m de branch; only He’s de vine

So I try to play the part, pretend everything's OK
I believe it in my heart, but my feet are made of clay
So with a painted smile, I say the same tired cliches
I may go the second mile, but then I lose my way

Do we always have to be
The first in line to pray?
Are we the first to hit our knees?
Or, like sheep, have we strayed?

Is this the “real McCoy”
Or a plastic masquerade?
Are we full of peace and joy
Or does the feeling quickly fade?

Though your prayer may be unspoken
His word will not return in vain
The invitation's always open
He can clean that crimson stain

To every heart that has been broken
To every sky that’s filled with rain
Stop your pining and your mopin’
Leave behind your ball and chain
And be free in Jesus’ name

Is there anyone who's hopin’
For the gift and not the wage?
To every heart that has been broken
By this plastic masquerade

The play is nearly over
It’s time to turn the page
But even if we’re clean and sober
We need to call a spade a spade

We needn't be someone
That we can never be
We mustn't jump the gun
Are we just too blind to see?

Is there anyone who's just barely copin’
Anyone who thinks this is just a stage?
I pray your eyes will soon be opened
And you'll let the lion out of the cage

You'll stop your whinin' and your mopin’
You'll leave behind your ball and chain
You'll stop your cussin' and your smokin'
And be free in Jesus’ name
